CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Alex pushed her way through branches in the direction of Leeuie’s voice. How could they have reached a dead end? Forests didn’t have dead ends.

She found the four alpacas and Leeuie staring up at a towering wall of intertwined vegetation. A thick patch of the yellow flowering plants had grown right at the base, where they were standing. The bright, sunny colour was a cheery contrast to the sombre green of the living wall. But Alex felt anything but cheery as she looked left, then right. The wall just went on and on and on. There was no way past.

They had hit a dead end.

‘We must have come the wrong way,’ Alex said.

Leeuie took his hat off and scratched his head. He turned in a circle, put his hat back on, and gently tapped the compass. ‘Nope, this is definitely the way to the eagle’s nest.’

‘Is he positive?’ Moraika said doubtfully.

Leeuie frowned. ‘Did she ask something?’

‘She wants to know if you’re positive this is the right way.’

‘Absolutely.’

‘One hundred percent positive?’ Lilly chimed in.

‘Two hundred percent positive?’ Ollin added.

Leeuie looked at Alex, blankly.

‘Are you positive positive?’ Alex said.

‘This is the way to get to the eagle’s nest,’ Leeuie said. He pointed at the centre of the green wall. ‘It’s just through there.’

‘And how are we meant to get through there?’ Alex asked, her patience wearing thin. Leeuie had promised he knew how to get to the eagle’s nest. It was the reason he was here. And she didn’t have time for his uncertainty. Mum didn’t have time for it.

Leeuie unclipped his knife from his belt. ‘I suppose if it’s just plants we could cut our way through.’ He started slicing wildly through the creepers, but the knife struck something hard. He retracted his hand quickly, shaking his wrist.

Using the blade of the knife, he pulled back the creepers to reveal solid black rock underneath. He gave Alex a weak smile. ‘This knife is good, but it’s not that good. Sorry.’

Alex glared. What good was sorry? Sorry was not going to stop her stomach from groaning with hunger or her shoulders from aching. Sorry was not going to get rid of Kiala. And sorry was not going to make Mum better. ‘I need to find the white eagle,’ she said through gritted teeth. ‘I thought you said you could do that.’

‘I can!’ Leeuie protested. ‘The nest is through there.’ He hesitated, then added in a small voice, ‘Well, at least, I’m ninety-nine-point-nine percent sure it is.’

‘What does that even mean?’ Alex glared daggers at him. ‘You told me you knew how to get to the white eagle’s nest.’

‘I didn’t say that exactly. I told you I thought I knew how to get to the white eagle’s nest, but I’d never actually been there.’

Alex groaned loudly. She wished the white eagle would suddenly appear and eat Leeuie for lunch so she would never have to see him again. ‘So you’re saying we’re lost.’

‘We’re not lost,’ Leeuie said, but he really didn’t sound certain about that.
